In 2010, the City of Eureka made a series of infrastructure improvements to enhance pedestrian and cyclist safety and access around Washington Elementary School in Eureka.

Chester Street

Enhancement: Sidewalk
Sidewalks provide a level surface for pedestrians and provide separation from the roadway.

Before: No sidewalk along Chester Street adjacent to

After: Installation of 625 linear feet of 6’ wide sidewalk on
Chester Street adjacent to Washington Elementary School,
Eureka, CA. (2009-2010)

Dolbeer Street

Enhancement: Raised Crosswalk
Raised Crosswalks increase pedestrian visibility to motorists and provide a crossing surface that is level with the sidewalk.  In addition, raised crosswalks are effective at reducing traffic speeds due to their similarities to a speed hump.
